BoN ApPeTiT: Meal Organization & Cooking with Kids

Originally I had ordered a vinyl "Bon Appetit" for another project in the kitchen but this Cooking Assignment Board took precedence.

I've been trying to find ways to train and teach my children while at the same time hopefully lighten my load.

I found a piece of scrap wood. I spray painted the edges black and the top an antique white. Then I sanded the edges and top.

I applied the vinyl 'Bon Appetit' and 6 designer thumb tacks with the first letter of each day of the week above it.

I have one child for each day, I take Sunday and of course give the two littlest kids a ton of help on their days.

Then I laminated tags with the meal on the front and the ingredients on the back.

The kids have to find out what ingredients go into each meal and check that we have those items in the pantry/fridge/freezer. If not, they write that item on the shopping list.

Our busy schedules don't allow the kids to have an assigned day so they each have a colored clip to attach to the top of the meal they plan to cook.

They hang from a metal ring on these hooks.

We haven't eaten as much Pizza and Subway and teaching them how to cook has been a good experience for us all.

In the past I just assumed they were watching me and learning because they always seem to be pacing the kitchen when I'm making dinner, but I was surprised that I've taught them things that seem obvious to me like:

  • Tablespoons vs. Teaspoons

  • Keeping metal utensils out of the good pans

  • Using correct amounts of spices

  • Clean up as you cook

They've also learned that it takes time to cook dinner, but for me I think it's been nice to spend one on one time with the kids in the kitchen and to be able to teach something that I like doing is a definite bonus!
